Voula and the server.
Back in the mid 2000’s I had an optometry practice as a client. After a mutual disagreement, we decided to part ways amicably. They paid me what they owed me and I gave them all of the admin credentials and necessary network info via email. After I hit send, I gave it little more thought.
Later that afternoon, I get a really hostile call from someone purporting to be their new tech person. He says that the credentials I gave them for the server aren’t right and that I am holding their server hostage and starts threatening me. I calmly inform him that I gave them the right credentials and hang up.
About a half an hour later, I get a call from the kids at home. Two men in black suits with bulges under their arms were at the house looking for me. FBI if they ever saw them. They showed badges even left a card. I figure it’s only a matter of time before they show up here at the office. It took 15 minutes. They show up at my door flashing badges. I invite them into the office, and they immediately start asking me what I did to the server. “Absolutely nothing.” I say. “If whoever is over there isn’t smart enough to log in, it’s not my problem.” I show them that I have no remote access to the server as they have taken it offline. I tell them, “Look, unless you’re restraining me, I’m on my way over to Jasper’s next door for a cup of coffee, you’re welcome to join me if you’d like.” I tell them.
We sit down in a booth, with them blocking me in, and I tell them “Look fellas, I didn’t do anything to the server, there’s something else going on here.” One of the suits tells me that they have their guy over there looking at it and he says I sabotaged it.
Now I’m not going over there. I know better than that. So, I call Voula and ask her to go over and look at it for me. She calls and learns that they moved the server before they tried to log into it. Voula leaves the bank a few blocks away and goes over there. Once she gets there, she is taken to the server. It takes her 2 seconds to see the issue; the PS/2 keyboard and mouse connectors are reversed. She puts them in properly and logs into the server first try after I tell her the password over the phone. No one says a word as she leaves.
The two agents get up to leave without saying a word.
“See ya’ fellas.” I say to them as they head towards the door. They didn’t even pay for their coffees.
